Review: The Sunday Age July 24
People have been deriding Melbourne's The Sailors as vulgar, offensive, sexist, racist, homophobic one-trick ponies for years. But they're not. Well they are pretty vulgar, and the lyrics are distasteful, but if you listen to the snarling Cracker in the Niggertonk, the sing-speak of I Wanna be Black, and the almost-sweet refrains of Back in the Closet, it's obvious that The Sailors are challenging prejudices by subverting stereotypes. Then again, maybe they just write dick jokes. Regardless, last I checked, rock music was supposed to be confrontational and offend your grannie. The Sailors still write a damn fine rock tune either way.

Upon first listening to Violent Masturbation Blues, it's easy to wonder if one hasn't missed some great irony that is sure to turn up at any moment. But there is no irony here, this is literally one of the worst albums ever to soil the Australian music scene and that, unfortunately, is entirely the point.
Violent Masturbation Blues would actually be a pretty decent punk album if it were not for the ridiculous lengths The Sailors have gone to in order to be as offensive as possible. Track ten, 'Asian Ladies', is a fine example. There is no subtlety to this humour. Nothing is left to the imagination.
From the boringly repetitious opener 'Trim The Bush' to the horrifically painful 'Swashbuckling Faggots' this is an utterly ridiculous album - no doubt rivalled only by The Sailors' previous release, the Teenage Homosexual Blues 7". - Kelly Ventress (Time Off, Brisbane, 2 October 2001)
